You people can enjoy your choice all you want but like Valve, I will only support/recommend Ubuntu. Why? It is easy to provide support to people if they are using the same set of tools which is great for me and it is great for them as it is easy for them to help their friends as well. Ubuntu, or an official derivative of it, is what I recommend to people. Most of these people are PC Gamers and the biggest stumbling block is getting the latest graphics drivers. Over the past few weeks I've been helping a lot of people begin their journey into Linux.

Even more so when you are the distribution of choice for many, many companies and end users. One would think that making drivers that are the latest easy to install would be on of those steps.

There was a post on phoronix a few years ago, still unable to find the post, in which Canonical, or at least someone at Canonical, had an outline for improving Linux as a gaming platform. More importantly, rather than switching from the 304 to 331 branch, there should be a branch that always provides the latest stable driver that is available on the NVidia or AMD website.Īnother thing I forgot to mention. Ubuntu has a great feature called the additional drivers tool, as I know, but when you are limited to several driver branches with no way to use a new branch without upgrading to a new release, that isn't right and it needs to be fixed.

Graphics drivers are, for the large part, the exception to this rule. The do thing about Linux, in comparison to Windows, is that the vast majority of drivers come out of the box and will provide full support for the hardware. The distribution itself is fine but unlike some of us here who will add a PPA, do a tty/terminal method or use the open-source drivers, I do not expect the people I am talking about to do that. Because of this, the go to distribution, as supported by Valve, is Ubuntu. This isn't for me, this is for the not-so-techy guy who enjoys video games but wants to try out Linux. Maybe I should make a bit of clarification.
